In mid-sentence, James stopped trying to explain to Peter the more delicate aspects of what it meant to be a good Seeker and stared intently at the staircase. With a smirk, Sirius began to count out loud.

“One... two... three... four... fi-” Lily began walking down the staircase, her head turned as she talked to the two girls following her. “You’re getting better.”

“How can you tell she’s coming? Does she have a strange walk?” Peter was always full of irritating questions.

Lily swept a glance over the occupants of the Common Room as she worked her way down the stairs. As she had for the last few weeks, she stopped on James for a few seconds, grimaced, and looked quickly away. At least she was acknowledging him again.

“She smells like rain,” he said quietly, putting his hand to his chest where the ache was growing. “Can’t you smell it?”

“No, mate. If we could smell it, we’d all be running for our umbrellas. That girl is a monsoon.”

He turned on Sirius, his hands bunching up his shirt before he realized what he was doing. “Don’t you ever-” but something stopped him. A hand on Sirius’ shoulder. An awareness of someone beside him that male.

“Is fighting all you do? I don’t think I’d be his friend anymore, Sirius.”

“You’re talking to me?”

But she didn’t look at him. “Remus, I need some help with my Arithmancy. Trade you for some Potions help?”

Without thinking, which was getting to be his usual way of doing things, he loosened his hold on Sirius and locked his hands on Lily, pulling her close. He started kissing her, struggling to keep her close enough that she wouldn’t be able to get a decent punch in. Instead, when she freed herself, she glared at him and walked away.

“Too bad,” Peter murmured, thinking he was offering his friend comfort. James couldn’t help but smile. She’d kissed him back. Just for the barest sketch of a kiss but it had been there.

“Whenever I walk into a room, I see you looking at me. How do you know when I’m walking into a room?” she asked later that night. He just smiled. Best not to give away secrets. Instead he nuzzled her ear until there was a catch in her breathing. She pressed against him, the soft jersey of her shirt rasping against the skin of his chest. There was no way she was going to walk away from him tonight.

“When are you going to acknowledge me in front of your friends?” he whispered into her neck as she cried out. His fingers had found the elastic of her knickers and had delved deep. No matter that she’d decided he was a liability during the daylight when he could run his fingers through the gold threads of her hair. For now, he was her late night secret, one she didn’t appear to be willing to let go of just yet.
